Very interesting and thorough article about how our biology can influence our food choices, and how our food environment can hack these biological systems.
“Many highly processed foods have a savory taste that mimics that of protein-rich food, but they often have a very low protein content. Since they appeal to our protein appetites without satisfying them, we are tempted to eat much more of them than is good for us.”
If you feel that you are never satiated, remember to include protein in your diet. However, it is important not to obsess so much about protein that it becomes an exaggerated portion of your diet. For example, incorporating a good share of healthy carbohydrates – including fibre! – seems to improve longevity (besides the fact that you need them for energy). These proportions will change according to your body’s needs.
“It’s a matter of understanding the relative costs and benefits associated with different diet compositions, relating them to personal goals and breaking away from some of the crazy diet zealotry that goes on online and is promoted by many of the fad diet industries.”
Create an environment where your choices are around whole foods, including plenty of plant-based foods. In that environment, your body is more likely to guide you through a balanced and healthy diet, without obsessions or exaggerations.
